The change over to digital broadcasting has been written to death. It is coming, congress has just voted not to delay it so it will happen on schedule. The myth that cable and satellite are not affected is just that, a myth. Comcast has already shifted some very important channels to all digital. (Cartoon network being a grandchild important channel) Comcast states they will be gradually changing all of their analog output to digital. What does that specifically mean to all of us cable users. It means you must have a digital tuner to get those channels that are currently digital and those they will be changing. So like all of the “over the air” folks, you will need a converter box so it is just plain old crap that if you have cable you won’t be affected by the change to digital. Every time I see a Verizon Wirelesss commercial, I find myself screaming at the TV, male cow excrement. I love my LG Dare phone and find Verizon service is NOT as universal as they claim. If I go out in my front yard, stand on one foot, cover my right hand with aluminum foil and point to the north star, I might be able to make or receive a call. I don’t live in some obscure, third world state, I live in suburban Pennsylvania. Verizon says I live on the wrong side of a hill, then why do their commercials pretend that there are NO wrong sides of hills for their service. If I could get reliable wireless service for my phone I would be a prime candidate for a wireless modem. I sit here, enjoying the sunshine, reveling in a relaxed environment and lusting for an internet connection. Admittedly addicted, I was fine for the first two days and when I made my way to the local hot spot and found 90 emails that made their way through my spam filter I was overwhelmed. Do I deal with that much crap every day? Apparently so as I weeded my way through things that were deemed to be significantly important to my spam filter. Of course one email was from a client that wants a meeting. Generally when I do web sites I have an initial meeting with the client and may never see them in person again. Funny how quickly the airlines raised their prices, implemented surcharges and luggage up charges when oil prices were high and now that oil is as low as it has been in years, the airlines are still surcharging every thing is sight. You pop in SATA hard drives just like you pop your PDA into it’s docking cradle. My only beef is they only make it for SATA hard drives. I think a model for ATA hard drives would make a lot of sense since many of us have ATA hard drives just laying around not being used. The dreaded dead zone, I live in one. I live in an environmentally sensitive township with a distinct lack of cellular towers and an antagonistic relationship with cellular carries. This means that the phone number on my business card is totally useless unless I go stand in the yard, put one foot on the well cap and the other on a large rock, put one hand in the air and hope that I get my cell call made before my neighbors call the funny farm to haul me away. I have blogged on my LG Dare and I love the phone however it has no external antenna port and to add an antenna I have to drill the cover and void the warranty and I can’t bring myself to do that. They look like tiny little hard drives but they are so much more. The new SSD drives are coming. Today’s hard drives are going to look like the fat boy at the beach compared to the SSD drives. Solid State Drives are far, far speedier and because there are no moving parts, far more reliable. Who among us can claim to have never lost data due to a hard drive failure? SSDs will not totally eliminate failure but will reduce it to the point of non-discussion. They are currently pricy. I found a 128gb SSD at NewEgg for $295.00. I found a 500gb hard drive at the same place for $65.00. Remember though, lasers were $5,000.00 not that long ago and now you can a laser printer for $99.00. SSD is here to stay and we will start to see them proliferate in something beside ipods and laptops, in the not too distant future.
