Optical Storage Predictions

I don’t know if referring to someone else’s blog is still blogging or just being a traffic cop. I read an interesting article on the impending demise of optical storage. It is on zdnet and by Robin Harris. His article pointed out that hard drive storage capacity is growing and is still considerably faster than optical storage as well as cheaper. He cites the historic precedents of punch cards, tape, small capacity floppy drives and escalating changes. He ends by asking hard drive manufactures to come up with archive quality hard drives. I enjoyed the article and agreed with much of what he said. I do heartily agree that there is a need for archive quality hard drives. Until a hard drive exists of that quality, I will continue archiving on optical disks, both CD and DVD. I haven’t moved into blu-ray and don’t anticipate doing so. By the time I finish burning the major stack of optical media I have, there will be some better alternative.

SATA Hard Drive Docking Station

Here is a very cool tool for your favorite computer geek. It is a hard drive docking station. It is made by ThermalTake , part number N0028US, under $40.00 including free shipping at Amazon . You pop in SATA hard drives just like you pop your PDA into it’s docking cradle. My only beef is they only make it for SATA hard drives. I think a model for ATA hard drives would make a lot of sense since many of us have ATA hard drives just laying around not being used. How cool would it be to just be able to pop in those old hard drives as easily as a CD or DVD? Alas they only support SATA but it is still something to consider. This is not a paid post however if you do decide to buy it and go through the Amazon link I will get a commission. Specs: 2.5” & 3.5” USB SATA HDD Docking Station, Supports All 2.5” & 3.5” SATA Hard Drives up to 1.5 TB !! Supports All 2.5” & 3.5” SATA HDDs up to 1.5TB ! Hot-Swap Capability for Rapid Multi HDDs Access & Exchange Supports USB 2.0 Transfer Sp...

Hard Drive Crashes, Man Jumps Off Roof!

Has this happened to you? Has your computer hard drive ever taken a nose dive into oblivion? Don’t despair there is hope. If you have had a computer for any length of time, you probably have had a hard drive failure. In and of itself a hard drive failure isn’t necessarily horrible if you have a good backup. However that is a seriously big IF! Most people intend to do backups, some think they do backups but very few actually do backups. So what if your hard drive crashes and you have no backup? The other night a friend approached me at my favorite watering hole and told me that her hard drive had died. She was practically distraught in that all of her family photos were on that drive and she had no backup. I pulled out my key chain and read a name and phone number off of my led flashlight. The company I recommended was Drive Savers. Why do you recommend things or services? I make recommendations based on my experiences, sometimes on reviews but most comfortably based on my experiences. ...

Boost your Cable or Satellite DVR recording capacity by up to 400%!

I got this article in a newsletter from Diamond Case Designs Inc. (the home theatre people) It provides a solution for a frustration many of us have with our TV. The shows we want to watch aren’t on when we are available and when we TIVO them we often blow off stuff we haven’t even watched yet due to lack of space. There is a solution that won’t break the bank. Diamond Case is a family owned and operated business that specializes in knowledge and know how as opposed to down and dirty pricing. That doesn’t mean they are expensive, it just means that finally you can get what you pay for. I highly recommend the company and will periodically reference their newsletters as they are very, very informative. (No, I do not have any financial connection to Diamond Case, however if they wish to buy me a beer, I will be happy to accept it.) Diamond Case’s Article. Is your DVR running on fumes as you constantly fill up your hard drive? Are you deleting programs you have not yet watched? Are your ch...

A Good Use for old IDE Drives

This relates to my post about backing up your data. If you have some old ide drives laying around and are comfortable with a simplistic installation, read on. This description is right off of the Amazon site and their box has a full one year warranty from Netgear. My experience with Netgear and their service and warranties has been very positive. If you want to live a little closer to the edge, the same unit is available at http://www.computergeeks.com/ refurbished with a 90 day warranty and half the price. For the money, I think I would go new. Of course if you are like me and have multiple old computers on your network, you can just throw some extra drives in them and achieve a similar success. If after reading this you are totally turned on to buy one, the geek link is above. To buy from Amazon, click on my Amazon Store Widget and put NETGEAR SC101 in the search box. The NETGEAR SC101 Storage Central is an expandable storage system that allows shared access by all computers on your...
