The Disappointing Google Nexus Is Here

Boy talk about a let down. I am sure the phone is sweet, what I don’t like is that it is business as usual. At this point you can get the phone for a price similar to the rest of the “Droid” phones as long as you are willing to get it from T-Mobile. Supposedly it will be available from Verizon and others soon. WhooHoo, I thought that Google was going to provide a new method of cellular dispersal. I had hoped they would help to end the vise the providers have put around our heads. If you want an unlocked Nexus it is over $500.00. Maybe that is a reasonable number for some folks but for me and I suspect many others, $500.00 is way too much money to spend on a phone that is only marginally or superficially better than anything else. The exorbitant price and the failure of Google to provide a new improved business model for cell phone distribution is just darn disappointing.

Inexpensive Portable GPS, Not Yet.

I was looking at portable GPS devices. Even though I don’t mind stopping for directions, it would be nice to have a clue where I am going. Now that I am retired I have anticipated a little more car travel. I did some research and after reading until my eyes bled, I decided to buy a cheap one and see how I liked it, then spring for a better one. Staples had a deal on their Omnitech GPS after rebates and other money games for $79.99. It has a 4.3” screen, text to speech and I figured with my $15.00 Staples cash would cost me an affordable $64.99 plus tax. I went in to Staples to see it and it was the only one on display not working. I asked the clerk and he said the screen was bad and I didn’t want it anyway, it was a piece of junk. He said he hated to sell them because he got so many back. I couldn’t decide whether to be grateful he saved me from a bad purchase or suspicious that he was trying to move me into a more expensive GPS. Since I now had a serious case of ambivalence, I didn’t ...

Kindle’s Big Brother Is Coming

Being a technut, I love to see really cool stuff coming out. I have a PDA and it holds my books and I use it when traveling and when I am reading in any low light environment. The back lighting enables reading just about anywhere. If I didn’t already have a PDA, I am sure I would have a Kindle. Now Amazon has brought out the Kindle DX. It is way bigger and I am sure easier to read. If my 401k hadn’t turned into a 201k, I would consider buying it. As gadgets go it is a bit pricy at $489.00 but give it a couple of years and inevitably it will drop in price. Here are the specs. This is not a paid blog but if you buy one by clicking on the link below, I will get a commission. Not enough to buy a Kindle book, let alone a Kindle but every bit helps. Since I use any thing I make on my blogs or Amazon to buy more books, if you buy something from my site, you are supporting Literacy. So Support Literacy!
