Western Union: Beware of Hidden Fees

Recently I attempted to pay a book illustrator for her work by using PayPal.   I have used the PayPal service to send my illustrator money for several years.  The December payment went through just fine.  Imagine my surprise when the March payment would not process.  I spent hours, that’s hours, not minutes on the phone with PayPal who never did figure out the problem.  I was forced to find an alternate method of paying my illustrator.

I turned to Western Union whose $34.00 fee was less than the $65.00 bank transfer fee my bank wanted.   Now the hidden fee part comes because if you use a credit card to fund a Western Union transfer, you get charged Cash Advance Fees by your credit card company.  That added an additional $11.99 in fees to the already $34.00 fee from Western Union

Now my illustrator lives in Bosnia.  I don’t know why PayPal could not re-do a transaction they did multiple times over multiple years.   That remains a mystery.

This is under Buyer Beware, there may be fee’s you never considered when you try and pay someone through the Internet.

Amped Wireless APOLLO PRO, Long Range HD Wi-Fi Camera (LRC200)

Update I did get a call back from tech support today, 18 hours after I left a message.  They left a trouble ticket so I called and after a short wait got a tech.   I was advised to reinstall the software as that might have a bearing on the lock ups.   The tech was not sure if the camera stores photos on your phone as well as the cloud or only on the cloud.   The user manual wasn't clear on that either but their application does save the snapshots to your phone storage.  I can not find any way to dictate that it save if to the flash card rather than the  phone memory itself.  The shots I took yesterday right before the software locked up are nowhere to be found.  I moved the camera away from my desk and my router.  It is now six feet away from a network extender that is showing a strong signal on my meter.  The camera however is showing a weak signal and black and white instead of color.  The tech said that the quality of the picture including color is directly related to the wifi signal strength.  I am not sure why it is not seeing the network extender.   It uses the same set up as the main router.  Overall it was reassuring that someone did return the tech call but the product still doesn't thrill me.  I will keep working at it and if I get some revelation I will report back here.

My initial reaction to this camera was not positive.  I had followed the instructions to download the application for my Android phone from playstore. It installed and then asked me to set up an account.   My attempt to set a password was immediately thwarted.  It kept telling me to put in 8-20 characters and I was inputting the correct number of characters.  What it did NOT tell you was that you can not use any special characters.  I discovered this after calling their tech support and hanging up after having been on hold for 21 minutes.   I was just shutting the application down on my phone when I had an ah HA moment and tried a password without any special characters.   From that point forward the installation went smoothly.

The camera is clear and the ability to record or take photos is pretty simple.  It attached to my network with no hassles.   It does have Cloud recording but only 30 days free with the camera purchase.   They do appear to have a reasonable price for cloud storage.   I did try and log in from my desktop and was told that they only support Internet Explorer and Firefox.   I did download the necessary plug in for Firefox and was able to view the camera live.   You could also look at your cloud recordings and manage them from the browser.

Once again I am surprised that there is no support for Chrome which is my browser of choice.  Firefox is my second choice so it won't be a major hassle to use it when I want to check the camera from my desktop.

Overall after the initial frustration with account setup, things went smoothly until I shut the application down and then reopened it.  The software would show a live picture but would not change screens or open any menus.   I had taken two snapshots to illustrate the 10X digital zoom but after rebooting the software, I could not get to them.   This appears to be a work in progress.  I am not impressed with their software.  I got the camera at no charge for purposes of review, frankly if I had spent $189.00 on this I would be most unhappy.

 from the vendor:

Kudos to Jockey Brand

Jockey Brand Rocks!
I recently made a purchase of some Jockey brand items on Amazon.  They arrived and I was dismayed to see I had ordered the wrong size.  My first reaction was negative thinking now there will be the hassle of a return and this is why brick and mortar is better and what an idiot I am for not realizing the size returned to the default medium when I changed color and yes this is an excellent example of a dreadful run on sentence.

Cutting to the chase, there was a Jockey packing list with an 800 number.  I called and explained it was my error and asked what I could do to remedy it.  The delightful customer service rep asked my email address and promptly sent me a free mailing label and told me to re-order the correct size at Amazon.  Talk about Easy Peasy!

The product is excellent and now I know the customer service is just as excellent!
Kudos to Jockey!

How to FIX Home Group Failure

After a recent Win10 upgrade my Homegroup stopped working.  The computers that not long ago happily shared data, pics and docs now refused to see each other.   Goggling the problem led me to all kinds of useless information.  The solution is actually quite simple.

If Homegroup stops working, you must turn off all the computers that were in the group and start over.  Go to control panel or network, find Homegroup and it will let you set up a new one but you must have all the other computers in the Homegroup turned off for your main computer to allow you to set up a new Homegroup.   (Main computer can be which ever one you  want to use as your main computer.) When you set the new Homegroup up you will get a password for use with all the other computers.  Turn them on and go to control panel and Homeroup.  It will ask if you want to join the Homegroup.  Go through the questions and be sure to share all that you want to share.  Input the password and after a couple of agonizing minutes it should welcome you to the NEW Homegroup.

PayPal Failure

PayPal Failed Me!
I am sad to report that after eight days PayPal tech support had no interest or ability to solve my inability to send payment to an illustrator who happens to live in Bosnia. It appears that there is some hidden firewall erected between December 2016 and now that has shut the door on payments to individuals in Bosnia. In an attempt to determine if it was a problem with my system, I used a VPN and thus a different IP address and that did not work. I sent the money to a relative and they were not able to send the money to my illustrator. Paypal told my illustrator that they have no idea why the money won't transfer. This is a young lady that has illustrated many books for me and I was unable to pay her in the method I have used countless times in the past. Western Union was happy to send the money. The $34 fee was well worth the fact that it took me 10 minutes which included the time to set up the account. 10 minutes and $34 vs. a minimum of 4 hours on the phone with PayPal and multiple emails and messages, priceless 😡

PayPal Fails

Alas PayPal, I Thought I Knew You Well

I've been using PayPal for years.   Recently I have run into a PayPal wall.

I have tried to send money to a book illustrator for one week. I have talked to several tech support people. I have tried two different computers and three different browsers and ALL of the Paypal options to send this money. I have paid this same illustrator as recently as December for her work. Now sending money to Bosnia seems to be impossible. Is there some government boycott or regulation that I am unaware of? I am mystified as to Paypal's inability to solve this problem. A transaction of less than 5 minutes in December has now cost me hours of my time and damage to my reputation due to my inability to pay for work that was done.

One of PayPal's customer service reps suggested my illustrator invoice me and I pay her that way.  I just  tried to do that and got another error message.

Paypal international payment has a major problem.

After speaking to my fourth customer service rep today, I am no closer to sending payment to my illustrator who happens to be in Bosnia. I have WASTED 5 hours or more in the last 7 days trying to get an answer as to why a payment will not process. I have gone through the same diagnostic procedure with very pleasant customer service reps multiple times, multiple browsers, multiple computers and multiple headaches. I posted on this page and received a message to message, which I did, a note said immediate response is normal. I got NO response from posting here.

Transferwise is a very inexpensive method of sending funds internationally. Look into it!

This flexible hinge is an interesting concept.  You can use it just like any other laptop.  It can be folded tent like to use it as if it is on an easel.  You can flip it all the way around and make it act like a tablet.  I just downloaded a sketching ap and played with it as if it is a tablet.  The touch screen is suitably touchable.  It allows me to touch rather than click.  It seems reasonably fast but that is expected.  Overall my initial perceptions are very positive.

Zyliss Control Chef's Knife 8 Inch

This is a handy knife.  I particularly like the thumb indent.   I felt it added a control feature missing in many knives.  There is also a non-slip pad that fit my little finger on the underside of the handle.   On the top front there is a indent to help hold the knife when you rock .  Once again I like additional control.  I'm not a chef, I want to keep all my fingers and control features help.

From the vendor:

MoKo Case for Fire 7 2015 - Slim-Fit...

The case seems like good quality.  It fits well and snaps securely.   I like the hand strap that allows you to hold it.  The only problem is there is a touch too much play in the case.  Please note the two white arrows in the photo.  If you are holding the case by using the back strap, the fire tends to torque to the outside. The arrows show how the fire twists.  That isn't the problem as much as if you do put your hand at the edges of the fire, your fingers (at least mine do) may overlap the edge and then impact the touch function.   It is not a reason to overlook the case but if you have large hands, it may be an issue.

StarTech 2.5-Inch USB 3.0 External SATA III SSD Hard Drive Enclosure with UASP (S2510BPU33)

Wow!  The description said tool-less and easy install and it WAS!  It took me slightly less time to install the hardrive in the enclosure than it took me to walk to the end of my driveway to get the package out of the mailbox.  The drive slid in, the enclosure closed, I put the cable on, plugged it into my computer and it was recognized before I could pull up explorer.  Slick and easy, finally plug and play is becoming a reality.  $15.00 at Amazon

Manhattan Toy Little Jurassic Chomp Dinosaur Plush

This is soft and cuddly.  The weighted feet are kind of strange but they do able it to stand up right easily.  I am somewhat concerned about the eyes though.  I removed that type of eye from the last plush toy I got for a grandkids due to my concern about them biting off the eyes and swallowing them.  I embroidered eyes on the other dinosaur.  I will have to check with the parents before I give this as a gift as the eyes are, in my eyes, a possible safety issue. $22 at Amazon also seems a bit pricy for the size of the toy.

From the vendor:
·        Stuffed animal dinosaur features ultra-soft fabric that begs to be held and is impossible to put down
·    Weighted feet for plush toy to stand comfortably in place while not being toted around the Jurassic jungle

Delsey Luggage Passenger Lite Expandable Trolley Suitcase Carry On Color: Merlot

This is an attractive suitcase in a color that should stand out if on a luggage carousel.   The handle pops up easily and seems very sturdy.  The four caster wheels swivel smoothly and the suitcase pulls with ease.  It has an expandable feature utilizing a separate zipper that increases the size by about 3" in depth so roughly 800 cubic inches more.   Considering it is roughly 2520 cubic inches without the extra 3 you get roughly a third more storage.  I did the math in my head so if you use a calculator and I am wrong, such is life.  The suitcase has a nice feature that one half is separated by a zippered compartment so when opening, everything doesn't just fall out of the up side.   Overall this is a very nice carryon.  If after I actually carry it on to an airplane and have any negative issues, I will report back here.

From the Vendor:
Extremely durable and lightweight and is made of 100 percent ABS with a protective polycarbonate film
Features a TSA approved lock for maximum security
Fully lined interior, dual locking trolley handle and four spinner wheels
Fully featured at a great value

Armani Exchange Men's 'Smart' Quartz Stainless Steel and Leather Automatic Watch, Color:Brown (Model: AX2324)

This watch will have high appeal to the traditionalist and the technophobic.  It is a watch.  That's it, it doesn't interface with your computer or count your steps.  It doesn't have multiple time zones or a plethora of hands.  Three hands, clear face and easy to set are what you get.  It is good looking and functional without the wealth of gimcrack and gewgaws found on so many watches today.  What a concept, simplicity and style.

·                        Movement- three hand
·                        Features a durable mineral crystal
·                        Analog-quartz Movement

Uniify Verge Lite VR Headset

Uniify Verge Lite VR Headset UV005: 3D Virtual Reality Headset Glasses for iPhone 6/Plus, Galaxy S7, Note 6 Compatible with Google Cardboard and Daydream, Blue

If this is representative of VR I am disappointed.  However I do recognize that this was $14.88 when I purchased it compared to $70ish for a Samsung Gear VR rig so there is a pretty big price spread.   Now that it is $10.88 it is really cheap but... you do get what you pay for.  When I opened it's box one of the lens was rolling around inside.  I put it in the headset but that may be why things don't focus very well.  I downloaded lots of VR aps from the Google playstore and some of them were ok.  Most were like looking through an old ViewMaster if you are old enough to remember what that is.  Kind of 3D ish but no real great.   The still photos of places where you can look up at say the Eiffel Tower and then look around you in a 360 degree manner were the coolest thing but again, not really clear or in focus. I had hoped for a walking type tour through some place cool but I didn't fine one.  I wasn't interested in games so maybe there are good.

It was interesting the way you could focus a spot on a target to change scenes.  I did hook up a Bluetooth mouse to my Samsung S4 and it worked in some of the programs.   The S4 seemed fine.  My S7 seemed a little big for the unit.

You can wear glasses but it is very snug with glasses and was quite uncomfortable with my glasses on.  I did not find more clarity with or without glasses. For the money  this is adequate.  I didn't want to spend $75 to see what VR was all about but if this is all there is to it, I'm not impressed.

From the vendor:
Offer the best pixel per inch compare to other vr headset on the market
Optimize for movies and videos viewing, light weight, ergonomics design
Ipd adjustment 55-65mm, user able to wear glasses while using our virtual reality headset
Support 4, 7-6 inch smart phones: Iphone 6/6 plus, galaxy s6/s5 edge above and most smartphone
Include customize google cardboard vr qr code for viewing optimizations

TP-Link HS100 Smart Plug (2-Pack), Wi-Fi, Works with Alexa, Control Your Devices from anywhere (HS100 KIT)

Sadly I'm seldom grinning when I review a tech product.  Mostly because of the frequency with which they are difficult to set up and have abysmal instructions.  Wow, was I surprised with this product.  I have that giddy smile that accompanies a successful product test.  This works GREAT!  It configured easily and worked as advertised.   It is annoying that I can seldom report that but in this case I am happy to inform the world and TP-Link, JOB WELL DONE.   I scanned the QRC code on the quick start guide, downloaded the software into my phone, set the plug up and tested it in less time that it will take you to read this review.  What is even better is that the configuration holds even if you unplug the smart plug and plug it in elsewhere in range of your network.  Frankly that flexibility makes the product far more valuable as there isn't a need for constant re-setting the software.

Even better is that this product interfaces with the Amazon Echo.   I am impatiently waiting for delivery of my Echo and I can't wait to try it with this smart plug.  This is a product I can cheerfully recommend.

·                        2X Hs100 smart plug
·                        Remote access - control devices connected to the smart plug wherever you have internet using the free kasa app on your smartphone

Contigo AUTOSEAL Chill Stainless Steel Water Bottle, 24 oz,

I put ice and water in this and 4.5 hours later even after leaving it in a hot car for over an hour, I still had ice and water.  That is pretty impressive.  This fits into a car cup holder even though it looks like it won't.  This is ONLY for cold liquids not hot.  I like the auto close feature too, it saves a lot of fumbling around.
Later: I decided to see how long this would keep ice in water without the ice melting completely.  Over 24 hours after I filled the bottle with ice and water, there was at least 50% of the ice left.  That is pretty darn amazing.
From the vendor:
Our Lids Are Sealed - AUTOSEAL technology is leak and spill proof (Yes, there is a difference!)
For the Long Haul - Drinks stay cold up to 28 hours with Thermalock Vacuum Insulation
Carry On - Carry handle for easy transport
Cleaner Drinking - Spout cover to help keep out gross dirt and germs

Ravensburger Science X Smartscope

This seemed like a really good idea.  A kid friendly microscope type tool that incorporates their phone or tablet for display purposes.   I got it this afternoon and couldn't wait to put it together to see which one of my grandchildren  would find it the most enjoyable.  I now know none of them would.   You need to hunt through the instructions to find the english language version.  Then there is a separate sheet that should say read me first and might in one of the other languages that accompany it.  The separate sheet tells you how to install the magnifying lens into the holder, kind of tells you.  They tell you to install the two lens in the holes but then they tell you to use the hole on the right and then the diagram seems to show putting two lens into the hole on the right.   I'll never know as the lens are significantly smaller than contact lens and when trying to insert both of them in one hole, one lens went flying.  I spent as much time searching the room for the missing lens as I did reading the instructions.  I now have one lens, I have decided this is no fun and I don't want to subject any of my grandkids to a do it yourself magnifier.   This might be a good idea and looking at the rest of the instructions if the manufacturer would have installed the lens, the frustration factor would be minimal.  As is, with one lens, who knows if this will work.
from the vendor:
·                        Explore the amazing world of microscopic with Smart scope
·                        Take pictures of magnified objects to share with your friends or stream them to your big screen TV

Thames & Kosmos Remote-Control Machines: Custom Cars with Configurable Gear Box

It is nice to see a product that was well thought out.  This isn't only a fun car building kit, it is a teaching tool.   The excellent manual, yes you are no doubt as shocked as I,  I repeat manual is excellent.  Not only are the instructions good, there are teaching moments between each set of model instructions.  I like the fact that things are explained and done so in easily understandable terminology. This could be just handed to a child but it really provides the opening for all sorts of bonding and teaching between parent and child.  Note, engineers you may want to keep this for yourself but it is better if you share it with your kid.  You may think this is pricey but the teaching aspect alone is worth the price while the fun aspect of building different vehicles is a bonus.

·                        Construct ten different remote-controlled cars
·                        Build a fast race car that can speed across smooth floors and drive around the room using a precision steering mechanism
·                        Reconfigure the parts to build other vehicles with different gear ratios
·                        80 page full-color experiment guide and instruction manual
One of the models you can build.

4M Tin Can Edge Detector Science Kit

This is kind of cool.  I like the idea of it being science focused.  It is more of a model building experience than science project though.  The directions are a bit obscure but not hard to follow.  I do think it is a project for an adult and a kid unless the kid is pretty sharp.   It does go off the edge of my desk occasionally so it isn't perfect but when it works it is fun to see.

·                        Part of the Eco-Engineering/Green Science Series
·                        Fun science project creates a edge detecting robot

Panasonic KX-TGL432B Dect_6.0 2-Handset Landline Telephone, Black

This is a pretty slick phone system.  It is useable right out of the box without touching the manual.  However if you open the manual you will find a world of complexity.  The symbols in the manual could be a bit clearer.  For example one symbol is a wrench and that was difficult to tell in the printed manual.  The wrench takes you to where you can make many changes.  In fact there are pages and pages of things you can program the phone to do.  You can set it for Voicemail through your service provider rather than the answering machine.
Specific features I liked are:
►Large clear screen that backlights when the phone is answered or any key is touched.
►It has a shoulder grip which is a knobby projection on the back for ease on holding next to your shoulder.  However the speaker phone works very well and I have not had anyone ask if I was standing in a barrel when using it.
►Night setting allows you to disable the ringer for specific hours but also allows input of specific phone numbers that are allowed to get through the night time setting. Which is good for early to bed folks who still want to hear from family members or crucial business affairs.
►Call blocker is a feature that allows you to block unwanted calls from telemarketers or old girl/boy friends.

There is also a feature that I don't plan on using but seems well thought out is a sound activated baby monitoring function.  That is pretty cool.
Overall this is a phone system with a level of features that should satisfy the most discerning buyer.

From the Vendor:
Two Handset cordless telephone with Answering machine
Talking Caller ID in English and Spanish
Quickly block unwanted calls with easy call block, up to 250 numbers
Convenient paging system on base unit and handsets
Talk time 12 hours/standby time up tp 8 days

TP-LINK AC1200 Wi-Fi Range Extender AV1200 Powerline Edition with Outlet Pass-Through (TL-WPA8630P KIT)

This installed correctly from the quick start sheet.  I admit that was a pleasant surprise.  Altogether too often quick start is a misnomer.  Another thing to consider is that I am running multiple routers, signal extenders and wireless paraphernalia.   I fully expected some conflicts.  I got no conflicts.

The one button wireless connected and used the system config so no extra passwords were needed.  Signal was strong and steady.

I particularly liked how plugging in and using the house wiring and providing hardwired connections at the other end worked cleanly.  I have a mini cellular tower that must be hardwired and sometimes there is no close hardwire connection.  (BTW off topic, if you are unlucky enough to be in a dreaded dead zone cellular wise, I strongly recommend the Samsung mini-cell tower.  With it I can use my cell phone at home, without it, I have to stand on one foot, hold the front pillar and lean off the front porch to get half a bar.)

Back to the TP Powerline, it configured easily and I got a hardwired 100mps at another location in the house.  This product passed all my tests with flying colors.
