Is your Samsung Phone Dangerous?

Will Your Samsung Phone
Explode or Catch Fire?
(Summary)
Mine didn’t but look at the photos, the battery is so swollen it pushed the glued on back of the phone off.    I paid off the phone in December 2019 after two years of payments.  On January 3, 2020, three days after my phone was paid off, the battery blew up like a helium balloon.

Samsung repaired the phone but who in today’s society can two weeks without a working phone particularly if you are traveling and need to acquire transportation like Uber.

Samsung is returning the phone which they repaired at no charge but I am stuck with a new phone and 24 months of payments.

Somehow that doesn’t qualify as an elegant solution.

Samsung’s Bulging Battery Issue
January 3, 2020, while talking on my Samsung S8, the back of the protective case came off and next the back of the phone came off.   I turned the phone over and the battery looked like an over inflated tire.   I call my carrier, Xfinity, and they told me it was a Samsung problem.  Ironically, I had paid the 2-year phone contract off in December of 2019 so I technically owned the phone for 3 days after it was paid off and then failed.

I called Samsung and was told I would be connected to a specialty group.  I was then disconnected.   Since I was leaving on a trip the next day that would involve getting transportation, I needed a phone immediately.  Oddly enough, you cannot stand on the curb and shout  Uber to get a ride, you NEED a phone.

I went to the Xfinity store and when the young man helping saw my phone he wanted me to take it outside.  He said he had never seen a battery that had bulged that much and he was fearful it was going to explode or catch fire.

Xfinity would do nothing about the phone, they sold me a new phone with two years of payments again.   Ignoring my negative experience, I got another Samsung phone.   I am aware of the idiocy of this, this is the second Samsung I have had battery issues with and apparently, I am a slow learner.   Only an idiot would keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

Monday while in California 3000 miles from home, I got a call from a Samsung representative who apologized for my being disconnected on Friday.   She told me they would provide a box with a prepaid label and I should send the phone in for evaluation.   She inferred that they might be able to cover the cost of my new phone.   I was shocked and pleasantly surprised.

I returned home, took the phone out of the air tight metal can I had stored it in due to my fear of it exploding or catching fire.   I returned the phone to Samsung.

I got email telling me the phone was repaired and it was being returned.   The email did not mention the battery at all.  Battery is NOT mentioned at ALL.

I called and asked if this was my phone as the problem description was totally erroneous.   I was told that the phone was repaired and it was being returned.  The two representatives both carefully never mentioned battery.   I can only infer that saying “battery” at Samsung might be a trigger word to get someone fired.

Bottom line is they repaired the phone even though it was out of warranty.   I appreciate that.

What I don’t appreciate is that I was forced to buy a new phone and get locked into another two years of phone payments due to a defective product.   Samsung is aware of the battery issue.   They even have a “fire proof” box they send out for the phone’s return.   That certainly indicates that they are aware of the issue
.
I am glad that the phone didn’t catch fire or explode while in my pocket or while it was in front of my face.   I am dismayed that I am forced to buy a new phone and was stupid enough to buy a Samsung phone again.

Samsung you have failed in your responsibilities to provide a safe product.

Samsung FlipShot-ho hum

I just got the Samsung FlipShot aka SCH-U900. If you haven’t noticed by now, I am very family oriented, specifically focused on grandchildren. I frequently lament that I don’t have my camera on me. However, I always have my phone on me. Thusly I wanted a phone with a decent camera. The FlipShot comes close. Samsung claims it is a 3 megapixel camera with flash and zoom. The photos are not what I would consider decent from a digital camera but compared to my last phone/camera, they are much better. The phone has a slot for a micro sd memory card. I popped a 2gb card in there for saving my photos. I have not been able to find a way to default the photos to the memory card. You have to manually move them. I haven’t given up and perhaps in a software upgrade there will be a way to get them to the card without moving them manually. Getting them off of the phone is interesting. If you don’t buy Samsung’s charging/data cable, you can send them to yourself and get them on your pc that way. You
